Is Chromebook Secure?

Your article about the Chromebook and smartphones came at the right time as my laptop had been playing up. I am not sure that the latter would be for me as my fingers find difficulty in operating my mobile. I find your suggestion of a Chromebook interesting and will see if their price falls further.

Although I don’t store information of a sensitive nature on my machine, I am uneasy sending it to the Cloud. Do you think it is safe from prying eyes?

PD

I am a fan of the Chromebook, but the later generations will be much better, if you can wait.  One drawback of the current crop is that the screens are are, frankly  a bit too small for working on documents, if that's what you want to do.  But that's just a hardware matter, and I have no doubt that bigger ones will emerge soon.  My advice is to go to a sensible shop (John Lewis is always very helpful, in my experience, if there is one nearby) and have a play, before you buy.

You also ask "I am uneasy sending it to the Cloud. Do you think it is safe from prying eyes?".  The short answer is that if your data leaves your computer then it is arguably less safe than if it stayed at home; but it all depends on how safe your home is! Remember that the likes of Google (who would look after your data if you had a Chromebook) live or die by their care of your data.  Think of it like a safe deposit company; if you do business with a respectable company (Google are respectable, in my view), you assets will be as safe as it is possible to be.  Whether that is safe enough, is for you to decide.

Like so many commercial things, it's all a matter of trust; I believe we will all store almost everything with such organisations in due course, at which point I would expect the likes of Waitrose, or Virgin, trusted by everyone, to start selling a premium version.
