Political advertising online
General Election 2015
In my article in the Oldie in May 2015, I discuss the growth in the use of the Internet to publish attack style advertisements of the kind that are commonplace in America but illegal (at least on TV) in the UK.
The internet provides a loophlole that neatly sidesteps the laws, and this sidestep is all the more important as the use of the internet for watching videos and TV grows very fast, and actually watching the TV delines, especially amongst younger viewers.
I set out below a collection of this sort of advertising - and some more gentle, less negative examples. It is entirely a selection of my own, with little attempt at balance, just more or less as I come accross them. I will exclude the very tasteless and always try and establuish who has paid for them, but it is not always easy!
I would also be delighted to hear from readers with any examples I have missed.
